Why Family Chore Games?

There are many reasons why a family should have a GAME tradition:

Social competence, quality time, getting to know each other, team skills,….but lets rephrase the question for REAL mummies and daddies: and when I say REAL, I mean those brave creatures, who have a JOB to bring in the money, have to take care of the household, look after ALL the chores and make sure, that their kids are healthy happy and on their way to a good education, do CONSTANT troubleshooting and crisis management on the physical, material and emotional level for EVERYONE, and sacrifice ALL THEIR hobbies, fun and health activities, in order to get this daily bunch of little and bigger CHALLENGE-MANIAS going into something which we want to call a „functional family in a good life work balance“:

What would YOU GUYS give for your kids to be motivated to do : the DISHES, the LAUNDRY, their and your ROOMS FOR YOU?? What would you be willing to invest if your kids would start working as a TEAM together to turn your OFFICE-time into a 3 hour NON-disturbance zone? And what would you GIVE, to know that this would foster and cultivate LOVE, HARMONY, UNDERSTANDING and TEAM SPIRIT in your OWN FAMILY??? ARE WE REALLY ASKING THE QUESTION „WHY FAMILY CHORE-GAMES“ NOW???

Which Family can play?

We have designed the games for the classical Mother Father plus 2-3 kids constellation, in an age difference of 2-3 years. We know that there are many families, who do not fulfill these criterias and here is what we recommend: Missing criterias can and should be adapted accordingly, for example: If there is a Dad missing, Mom takes over BOTH roles (like she does in real life too). If there is a kid in the family that is too young to play it stays with the parents and becomes a „member of honor“, „helping“ the parents with the decisions and the donation of points.

The youngest age which we recommend is about 5 years. But REALLY it is the age, when the kid can understand and DO stuff in the household, like laying the table, putting the trousers in a washing machine, putting away the toys from the floor.. etc.

For starters we recommend to keep the classical roles of : Mom plays the Mother, Dad plays the Father, the kids are the kids in their roles of age….. The more experienced the family becomes in the field of gaming and Co-living, the easier the family can also CHANGE the roles in the game and have the fun of being a mirror for each other… („Wow i can play Daddy now!“), we actually RECOMMEND this variation! Its FUN!!

Who is the WINNER?

Lets face it: We all are VERY MOTIVATED to do stuff, if there is a PRIZE at hand. Especially if it is not too hard to get, and moreover when OTHERS are lurking for it too and are equally as motivated!

So,yes, we decided to go down the road of healthy competition in the game-creation. In these Games there can be Winners. There are prizes to be desired, there are points to be be won and harvested individually for each game. And yes there are strategies to be created to gain as much of them as possible… At the same time, we tried to make sure, that the feeling of being the „Loser in the game“ is minimized. Nobody is left behind, nobody is excluded. But yes, if you work less, you harvest less, and this leads to getting the smaller prize. Which can and should leave a certain ambition to win a bigger one next time. Of course the most important WINNER is the FAMILY itself, just by PARTICIPATING in the GAME and creating the most important component of EVERY game: the feeling of TOGETHERNESS and last not least, AWESOME- FUN !!!

What’s the PRIZE?

The most important motivator to play any kind of game, be it in business or family is always the question: WHAT DO I GET FROM PLAYING IT??

Only if the PRIZE is really desirable by everyone, will there be motivation to play !

So how do we create a PRIZE that everybody wants, when everybody in a family is of a different age, and wants different things?

Very simple: WE CREATE MANY, MANY DIFFERENT PRIZES, WHICH CAN BE EARNED INDIVIDUALLY. For that we have to sit down in the :

FAMILY- PRIZE CREATION- CIRCLE

The Family Circle is one of the most powerful communication tools in any kind of company: it is lead by the Mother and the Father of the Circle (usually Mom and Dad, but with growing maturity this can be handed over to older sons and daughters.). Final decisions are made by the MOTHER who is always supported by the

Every member gets to speak their mind, in this case their WISH for a prize that motivates them, to go along with the game. The WORD is handed over symbolically with a TALKING STICK or STONE. No one must interrupt the STICK/STONE-holder. The Stone-holder has limited amount of speaking time, about 3 minutes. (depending on the „hotness“ of the prize-topic, the speaking time can be expanded).

Variation: The MOTHER and the FATHER of the Circle, OFFER Prizes, which they KNOW their kids will love having. Ideally these are activities that the family can enjoy TOGETHER: like going CAMPING, going to a FUN PARK, going to the THEATRE/CONCERT/MOVIES, throwing a PARTY for each other etc. more about that a little later…

PRIZE CATEGORIES and GAME POINTS

We recommend the creation of at least 3 + 1PRIZE CATEGORIES and a Currency of Points or Coins with which the Prizes are evaluated.

1.) The MAIN Prize worth the highest amount of points, for example 1000

2.) The SECOND Category worth the medium amount of points, for example 500

3.) The THIRD Category for the small amount of points, for example 250

4.) The EXTRA Category for EVERYBODY who participated, but for some reason could not make any points.

POINTS are given out for completed tasks in special missions, but can also be earned by doing voluntary work in the household. The more points each member has earned, the more she or he can choose between the categories. There should be at least 1 prize from main category and several from the others available to each member. At the end of each Week-game, called a SCENARIO,… Points can „buy“ prizes. If not enough points were earned in the view of the players, the scenario can be prolonged for another week.

Tipps for Parents: PRIZE CATEGORIES

We recommend to OFFER prizes that YOU can control and that lead to a healthier & more creative life for your children. The following suggestions are not mandatory, YOU have to find YOUR best motivations in the FAMILY CIRCLES, it might take some time, important is the motivation of the kids… anyway these suggestions still might inspire:

CATEGORY1: COURSES and SEMINARS in the hobby of the kid: Painting, Writing, Martial Arts, Dancing, Acrobatics, Basketball, Football, Horseback Riding, Make up, Design, Swimming, Decoration for birthday parties, baking, cooking…

CATEGORY 2: a painting set; a set of tools for woodwork, a pair of dancing shoes, diaries, poetry textbooks, books that teaches certain skills like outdoor survival training; cooking, household, gardening, sports, art, movie making

CATEGORY 3: favourite (healthy) sweets, balloons that can be turned into figures, fancy biros, magnets, stickers with motivational quotes, tokens of luck, small crystals

how do we play?

RULES as Principles

1.) The Family Circle creates the prizes, confirms the rules comes together for point-donation and is court for cases of conflict.

2.) the Mother listens to all voices and makes a ruling. The Mother`s ruling counts. She can get help from the eldest daughter.

3.) in action the FATHER oversees the tasks and takes notes of the points everybody achieved, he can get help from the eldest son.

4.) The Family Circle decides on DURATION of a game, we recommend as the shortest form 1 week / 7days. It can also be done in 1 day, but that doesn’t real help the parents does it?

5.) Every action in each chore gets points, the actions can and should be made visible by announcing it to the FATHER or the eldest Son, who takes notes in the Family POINT list.

6.) The Role of the FATHER can and will be replaced by the role of the eldest son,.. if he takes over this role, he gets points for this important job. In many families the role of the eldest son can and should be taken by anyone of course a girl too, who is mature enough to keep track of all the actions and can take notes. Each FATHER-job has a salary of at least 45 points / game, it can be increased with extrapoints, for initiating TEAM WORK, more about that in detail in the GAME-description.

7.) If stuff gets broken during the game, it counts as minus points: for example a broken Glass counts as -40 points,…The amount of minus points can be set in the FAMILY PRIZE CREATION CIRCLE. Important: broken things have less emotional than „financial“ consequences

8.) If broken stuff gets repaired or rebought the points are restored to the family-members account, and can even gain EXTRA points!

9.) Lots of extra points can be earned by doing voluntary work, it just needs to be approved by the FATHER or the MOTHER -role. Doing special team-tasks, and achieving a chore- completion without a quarrel also is doted with extra-points.

RULES & FORMATS

10.)Many Rules can be adapted and even changed in the FAMILY CIRCLE, which should take place at least 3 times during the game: once at the beginning, once in the middle and once at the end.

SINGLE FAMILY FORM: is the basic form, it is played within the family in a minimum time frame of one week. In special cases, like for events& parties, this time frame can also be adapted to one day.

MULTIPLE FAMILIES FORM: is the advanced form.It needs a social media platform an app or some kind of communication which enables the families to SEE the chores done by the other family (fotos videos etc.). In this case each family battles each other in completed chore amount and time. The Mother and Father Role of the one family is the judge for the tasks completed and points given for the other family. The most important task, and this gets extra points, here is to keep the PEACE in spite of the competition. Ideally the families should unite in a PARTY at the end of each week. The winner hosts the party, the host never gets to do the cleaning afterwards.

NAME: Mission Impossible Category: Scenario
time frame: 1 week

Story: The Agents (kids) have a main-mission to crack the code of the safe, in which one SECRET new prize is stored. This can be achieved by solving sub-missions, in which the agents can harvest individual points. For each achieved submission in perfect teamwork a glyph of the code needed to crack the safe is given. If one task should not be fulfilled ideally and there is a glyph missing, the code still can be cracked, because it has a logical structure, like: „WeMadeThisMissionPossibleYEAH“

Tips for parents: the more drama you guys put into it the more excitement in the family.

Drama tipps: record the mission offer in Mission Impossible -style, think about a cool prize that everybody can enjoy, but nobody has thought of yet. think of a code that has something to do with the family maybe even the ancestry. be secretive. make each mission a fun experience, also for yourselves. create a cool BOOTCAMP for agent-training before the submissions.

Boot camp: Training

Each submission needs clear instructions by Mother and Father in a way that all Kids know the process. For that it makes sense to let each kid do the whole process by itself and let the others help out, if he/she does not know the next step. The goal is to have all the members so well trained in every aspect, that they can do it silently without telling each other what to do. It is important not to double an action that is already in process but to fill the gaps, do what is missing and think ahead what comes next.

ALPHA-mission: „Breakfast-Ninjas“

Category: submission

TIMEFRAME: 10 minutes for setting, 10 minutes minutes cleaning.

Story: Your mission should you accept it is: Learn in your training HOW to lay the table with nobody taking notice. Everything happens in silence, nobody tells you what to do, your agent -instincts kick in and you fill in the gaps of your team members. If an agent speaks he gets 5 Minus points.

Training: Mother or Father lead a training in which they show the fastest, most ideal way how to make breakfast & dinner, (later or with a lot of talent in kitchenskills, LUNCH can be added including the shopping & cooking). All agents should know all the necessary actions, so they can set the table WITHOUT SPEAKING. Silence violation: -10 points

STORY: Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to be trained to perform a SWIPING. Which means a scene of chaos and crime to the household, like toys, tools and clothes lying around in one room has to be cleaned as if it never happened. During a swiping mission everything happens fast and without speaking. Your agent training lets you react to any action of your team members automatically and naturally you do what is missing in the process.

TRAINING: is lead by Mother and or Father. All tasks have to be known by everybody, again this has to happen in absolute SILENCE. Any kind of word uttered leads to minus- points, from –5-10 points per phrase.

Charly Mission FIELD SUIT CLEANER

Story: Your mission should you choose to accept it, is to be trained to clean and upgrade the field-suits of your agent-family. You have to distinguish between white and colored outfits, learn the chemistry of powder and fluid detergent, the technology of the right program, how to work the machine, how to empty it and how to dry and if necessary iron your suits so they can be used as soon as possible again.

Delta Mission SECRET OFFICE TIME

category: Submission Time Frame: 2-3 hours

Story: Your mission should you choose to accept it is to create a wall of secrecy and extra energy for your chiefs to do the necessary office work for the final prize harvest. In order for this to work 4 different power plants have to be constructed around the house and office. One gaining energy from the earth, one gaining energy from the sun, one gaining energy from water and one gaining energy from wind. Your creativity and technical knowledge will be tested and rewarded. The chiefs must not be disturbed under all circumstances for at least 2,5 hours. Except for absolute emergencies.

Training: Mother and Father can suggest possibilities here however YOUR creativity ist the most important. The power plants do not necessarily have to work!

TASKS and POINTS: „SECRET OFFICE TIME“

The Agents can decide for TEAM-WORK ,individual work does not make sense here.

The successful TEAMWORK includes ideal collaboration in SILENCE, nobody tells nobody what to do, everybody fills the gaps, there is no conflict, everything happens within the set time frame. We suggest for our family format 300 points for each team member, including the FATHER-role, if played by a kid, for all 4 powerplant constructions . In this case not everything needs to be done as a team,… it is absolutely possible to let each agent work on his/her power plant of her choosing. No power plant has to physically work like a source of electricity or warmth,… but rather as a creative project that stands symbolically for a subtle elemental energy. The mission is only accomplished if ALL power plants are constructed and the chiefs have not been disturbed

As already mentioned, none of these game suggestions are mandatory, many have to be adapted according to family members and infrastructure. The important part is that the family starts having a project TOGETHER, maybe even starts to have the feeling of COCREATING something that is more than just a fungame. Here come a few final tipps to each of the elements of this game-cycle…

FAMILY CIRCLE: is ideal for bringing the family together, making a group decision and solving conflicts. Everybody needs to respect the talking stick and make sure no one, who holds it gets interrupted. The talking stick then is handed to the next in the circle.

Training the SILENT-WORK: Here comes a game, which helps to get an idea, how any kind of task can be done in silence by a group:
THE GAME of KING& QUEEN: Everybody walks silently in through the room, suddenly one person stamps his foot on the floor and shouts out: „ I am X the FIRST and I order my subjects to build me a (whatever he/she wants for instance) a castle with a swan lake and a big tower!“ drawing all attention to him/her. The other react instantly, by bowing deeply and taking the role of the subjects,.. after the KING/ QUEEN has announced her/his order, she/he claps her/his hands. This is the signal for everybody else to do exactly what the regent told them to do. They can become a tower, a swan, a lake shore in whatever manner they see fit,… it should be clear enough for the others to understand what they are playing so the others can compliment it. There is a strict rule of SILENCE though, which means nobody can order anybody to do something, the group has to find the solution just via offering and complimenting. It is quite amazing what we have seen groups build in this game, one of the highlights was, a massage parlor within a crystal club-disco with the beeves live on stage!

8. philosophy behind

We will discard the Battle of several families- Scenario for now and wait for YOUR feedback! Tell us which games worked best for your family and what needs improvement! This project wants to become a series of the most useful games that turn a family into a very productive entity.

The reason why we have designed this game-idea is that we see many people starting to lead their life working from home, and with that a lot of challenges start happening.

Home in a family is never silent, never a place of focus and strategy, but usually constant trouble shooting. In society we already have this clear idea of „life-work-balance“: you try to spent as much time with your family&friends as with your boss and colleagues,… and this becomes more and more a field of conflict of interests, especially if the family does not have an identity a feeling of „who are we? what are our values? what are our strengths and weaknesses. how can we support each other?“. These are questions every company asks themselves and we feel that the time has come, in which work and family are coming so close together, that our family-communities maybe also want to start asking these questions and feel that they are not only part of a social but also of a productive, creative and economical system.
